Milton H. Erickson (1901-1980)
"Perhaps the most important contributor to the acceptance of both
the science and the art of hypnotherapy in the 20th Century was a
psychiatrist whom some call the father of counseling hypnotherapy
- who also deserves the title of grandfather of hypnotherapy -
Dr. Milton Erickson.
So great are this man's
accomplishments that one could spend years just studying them. People
with outstanding professional credentials have examined, analyzed, and
written books about the work of Dr. Erickson; and some of his past
students have produced an audio cassette of Dr. Erickson's voice - to
go with you!
What is interesting to note is
that high numbers of people with medical backgrounds or other advanced
academic degrees approach the work of Dr. Erickson primarily from an
analytical standpoint trying to draw analytical conclusions as to why he
did certain things the way he did. At the same time, many professional
hypnotherapists who approach hypnotherapy more as an art consider Dr.
Erickson to be a master of hypnosis who worked intuitively. " ¹
He developed new strategies of
hypnotism by combining clinical and research techniques. He was the
master of indirect hypnosis; he was able to take someone into a trance
without mentioning the word hypnosis or using traditional methods.
Mr.
Erickson also wrote the entry for the Encyclopedia Britannica 14th
Edition, Volume 12 in 1954 for Hypnotism.
There are several good books
that discuss the Milton speech patterns like "My Voice Will Go With You"
the teaching tales of Milton H. Erickson by Sidney Rosen.
Anyone wishing
to know more about conversational hypnosis should research Mr. Erickson
to better understand hypnotic language patterns.
NLP was taken from the studies by
Richard Bandler of Dr. Erickson and Virginia Satir. |
